Riding in Cars with Boys

  • Idaho Film Society 1212 West Bannock Street Boise, ID, 83702 United States (map)

A single mother, with dreams of becoming a writer, has a son at the age of 15 in 1965, and goes through a failed marriage with the drug-addicted father.

From the Curator (Paige): This film adaptation of Beverly Donofrio’s autobiography is not one to shine an unrealistic light on young motherhood, but to present every flawed character in a way you want to root for them despite disagreeing with the majority of their choices. This female led film starring Brittany Murphy and Drew Barrymore, directed by the incredible Penny Marshall, tells the story of a 15 year old Bev getting pregnant in 1965 - where shotgun weddings and “doing the right thing” were the only option. It showcases friendship, struggle, addiction, and still holding on to your dreams despite your realities. I love this film because it is dark, funny, and heartbreaking. Truly incredible performances by Murphy, Barrymore and Steve Zhan. You’ll be laughing at Murphy screaming “My Daughter is a Tramp” on the side of the road and later sobbing at young Jason rushing to get his toothbrush.
